There are 42 recognized species of Capsicum according to the Monograph of Capsicum (Barboza et al. 2022). Despite being a genus of significant economic and cultural importance, it has been a challenging group to work with taxonomically since the assignment of its first scientific names. These taxonomic challenges partly stem from the fact that Capsicum has been continuously shaped by a wide range of human management practices and selection processes over more than 6,000 years across the Americas.
This presentation offers partial results derived from the analysis of Capsicum specimens belonging to various collections curated in the herbarium of the National Museum of Natural History.
